A Practical Guide to Human Rights in Islam

Haqooq ul Ibad

 Chapter 10

Sacrifice       Tawakal wa yeesar

We were discussing that there are certain things for which Allah gives preference to the rights of humans over His own rights.  These are Zakat and Haj.  As far as Zakat is concerned, it is obligatory only if you have material savings for it to become due.  Here we have another thing called Sadqa which is not obligatory but there has no limit been set for it.  Humanity and Islamic amicability requires it.  It has been left to individual's conscious to give in charity what they can from what ALLAH has given them.  Here I would like to give example of ghazwah e Tabook.  Hazarat Abu Baker (RA) brought his total possessions to donate. Hazart Omar (RA) brought half of possessions and one companion of prophet (PBUH) brought only a small measure of barley but that is all he had.  People gave him ridiculing looks, but prophet (PUBH) told them that he supercedes all in the eyes of Allah   and He accepted his deed because he gave all he had. Even then he didn’t care for his own and family's hunger.

Actually, these three examples were a lesson for us all.  They did whatever was put in there hearts by Allah but left us examples of sacrifice to follow.  It is for Allah to grant you the capacity for good deeds; however it is up to you to take initiation.  This is what in Islam is called Saee (efforts).  Allah says that "Humans get what they struggle for."The spirit of mawakhaat (brotherhood) between Muhajir and Ansar is unique in the history of nations when Ansars (locals) shared their things with Muhajirs (Immigrants) in Medina.  So much so that some Ansar even shared their families as many Mohajirs had left their families due to various reasons. Due to    this there was the risk of corruption in the society, because it was the custom in Arabs that they used to collect dowry on girls.   This was new example for sacrifice.

All this detail is to show that even if Zakat is not due on you, still you can give.  Even if you don’t have any material things to give then even a smile towards others is a sadqa according to prophet‘s (pubh) saying. It will be rewarded by Allah subahnahu ‘tala tenfold.  If you show kindness to others, they will respect you for this and on top of this you will receive tenfold reward from Allah and this will be continuing process.  Allah says that "Reward for giving from Allah is tenfold or it can be even more. Or unlimited "This is only if you give in the name of ALLAH.  There are numerous examples of companions of prophet (pubh).  You can say that they were different people, because they were trained by prophet (pubh) himself.  How can we fallow them?  But what about reverend Soophis in this regard.  Companions of the prophet (PUBH) were guided by him but the Soophees came later and left us excellent examples to follow.  We can still follow these examples.  There are people even now who consider the needs of others more important then their own and give quietly.  They hide their sacrifices rather than publicizing these.  They don't show off and also don't hurt other's self respect by talking about it.  People who make a show of their charity and not sincere with Allah, He will have their deeds thrown back to their faces because they are doing it not for Allah alone.
