A Practical Guide to Human Rights in Islam

 Chapter 8

The fasting in Ramadan

In our previous chapter while discussing about punctuality of prayers, we moved towards self-evaluation. If you think about it in the moments of your leisure, you will see how much resemblance there is between us and other nations. Self-assessment has great significance in Islam. That is why Allah mentioned in surrah Hashr reminding us to have His fear in heart, which is reminded to us everyday in our fajar prayers by imam. This reminds us that we should keep on evaluating and questioning ourselves about what we have stored for our future and this process should continue till death. However, how many among us think about the meanings of these ayaat. Think about these and you will be safe of all misdeeds.

There has been a lot written about Allah's worship but human rights have always been given less importance. Rather most of us even do not know that it is the most important part of our religion. As I have taken it up as my topic, so rights of Allah, with which we are usually less aware, I would like to tackle here briefly so that we can proceed to our main topic.

Let us talk about the second pillar of Islam, the fasting. Month of fasting (Ramadan) comes once in a year.  From the Quran we come to know it was a compulsion on all the nations before Muslims even on Hindus. It prohibits us from all that is halal or legal things for example eating and drinking from dawn to dusk.  If you stopped any one from wrong doing he will accept easily, but if you want to stop from right thing even then a child will not stop. But obey will of Allah specially will be rewarded for this deed.

God says reward is my responsibility and it is limitless. It is kind of a refresher course, which in the words of Quran makes people pious. Piety is the foundation of Islam but we should be pious to Almighty who rewards it limitlessly if done with true heart and sincerity. The purpose is not to give you hunger, rather it is a matter of testing how much more piety have you gained through it.  Did you keep yourself away from bad thoughts and deeds? Did you realize what hunger is and how it affects others? If you realized this and gave food to others with this realization, believe it that your fasting has been accepted and you deserve the promised reward from God. Otherwise to keep you hungry is not his goal; rather it is for all of you to gain Piety. If you have not achieved what Allah wants of you, then you have achieved nothing but hunger. As God said that your prayers keep you away from all bad deeds.

Every worship can be either Maqbool (accepted) or ghair-maqbool (not accepted). If your worship is accepted, then you should not have your previous faults. You should self-evaluate yourself to find out which direction you are moving towards. It is like If Aspirin is not curing your headache then, either it is fake or you have not diagnosed the disease correctly. Here situation is different as the doctor (Allah) and His medicine are not returnable. As a doctor, the Almighty and His prescription are both free of any kind of fault. Then where lays the fault which is causing the problem?  Self evaluate yourself and you will find the answer.  Care it and you will be successful in the court of almighty.
